The Westfield Education Association’s Executive Council partnered with area restaurants to provide a special, edible thank you to the staff of the Westfield Public Schools on May 7, as Teacher Appreciation Week came to a close.
“This has been a long year and we wanted to show our appreciation to everyone,” says WEA President Gail Alston, adding that WEA members wanted to support local businesses hard hit by the pandemic as well.
Eleven area restaurants delivered boxed lunches to each of the 10 schools and the administration building at Elm Street, providing a choice of sandwiches, along with a side salad or chips and, in some cases, a bottle of water. The restaurants are:
- &grain, Garwood
- Bagel Chateau, Westfield
- Feast Catering and Café, Westfield
- Hershey’s Subs and Deli, Westfield
- Jersey Mike’s Subs, Westfield
- Manhattan Bagel, Westfield
- Rock ‘n’ Joe, Westfield
- The Salad House, Westfield
- Tom the Green Grocer, Scotch Plains
- Tutti Baci Café, Westfield
- Vicki’s Diner
WEA Social and Gift Chairperson Tamara Zuckerman joined Alston and others in arranging for the boxed lunches for nearly 1,000 staff members.
“We have been in school from the beginning of September, giving 100% to our students,” says Alston. “The WEA will continue to be a positive part of the school district. We will continue to make sure that our students always come first.”
Superintendent Dr. Margaret Dolan thanked the WEA for this generous outreach.
“I can speak best for Elm Street when I say those sandwiches seemed to lift the spirits of a number of very tired staff members and, hopefully, this effort also supports local restaurants,” says Dolan.
